🎯 Course Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Understand that breakaway and self‑defence techniques are used only as a last resort, when all other options have failed
  • Gain an understanding of legal considerations relating to the use of force, including:
    • Common and Criminal Law
    • The meaning of reasonable force
    • Section 3(1) of the Criminal Law Act 1967 (defence of self and others)
  • Understand how Health & Safety legislation supports safe working practice, including:
    • Common‑law duty of care
    • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (Sections 2, 3, 7, and 8)
  • Apply safe and effective breakaway techniques from wrist and body grabs
  • Identify the quickest and safest escapes from strangulation attempts
  • Use effective stance and positioning to manage punches, head‑butts, kicks, and knee strikes
  • Assess and use the environment to minimise confrontation and support safe escape
  • Apply the minimum level of force necessary, maintaining therapeutic and person‑centred practice at all times
